Being an International PG at KCLSU - Simran’s experience

welcome

The King’s College London Students’ Union is a blessing to me as it has provided me with various opportunities to socialise with people of different cultures as well as participate in meaningful activities that boosted my intellect and aided in my personal development. A blend of productivity and fun is what I would describe KCLSU.

As an international student who has left her hometown and come to a new country to pursue her master’s degree, I believe that KCLSU's activities have helped me step out of my comfort zone and feel like a part of the King’s community. From volunteering opportunities for student groups and the opportunity to be a science gallery mediator to fun incentivised reward surveys and a blind date with a book, KCLSU has pulled out all stops to create an incredible experience for me. They have made an effort to understand the stress a postgraduate student undergoes and have organised initiatives such as Take Time Out (which includes a mini massage and a pizza and ping pong activity) to lower stress levels of students.

KCLSU provided me with the opportunity to become a student representative, which I believe helped me refine my leadership and communication skills. As a student representative, I gathered feedback from my peers on the course, attended various SSLC meetings and worked with the faculty to improve student experiences. The power to create change and the ability to ensure students' voices are heard by the faculty instilled a certain confidence and responsibility in me. I was able to network with people of different cultures, build my collaborative skills and multi-task as I managed my student representative commitments alongside my academic workload.

KCLSU has been a ‘second home’ to me. It has helped me build my own brand and identity while still being sensitive to the needs of other people.
