What are KCLSU doing to provide safe and inclusive spaces?

KCLSU continues to work with students, student groups, the university and local authorities to ensure student safety is at the heart of our operations and decision making.

  • Welfare Monitors:  Welfare Monitors are here to offer assistance and help with your concerns. They are trained in first aid and WAVE trained (Welfare and Vulnerability Engagement) and patrol Guy's Bar and The Vault each Wednesday Club Night; you’ll see them in a high-visibility pink vest!
  • Ask Angela Scheme:  If you’re feeling vulnerable in one of our bars, cafes, or activity spaces; go to a member of staff, KCLSU Welfare Monitor or security and ‘ask for Angela’, they will discreetly provide assistance and if necessary, ensure you get home safely.
  • Access to Free Drinks Spikies and Drinks Caps:  Simply ask for one at the bar if you would like to protect your drink.
  • Access to Free Spiking Testing Kits:  Speak with a member of staff at Guy’s Bar or the Vault if you suspect your drink has been tampered with.
  • Safe Spaces/Zones:  Designated quiet areas where staff can take you if you feel unwell, vulnerable or overwhelmed.
  • Professional Training:  All bar staff receive WAVE (Welfare and Vulnerability Engagement).
  • First Aiders:  At least one trained first aider working during all events in our bars.
  • Security and Checks:  Security teams are present at club events to carry out entry checks to help ensure student safety. Security carry out regular patrols of the venue and toilet facilities.
  • Best Bar None Accreditation:  KCLSU venues - Guy’s Bar and The Vault - were awarded the Gold Standard for this national award in June 2023.  More information available here. Guy's Bar and The Vault received Gold in 2022 as well.
  • CCTV:   While we don’t monitor CCTV footage as standard, we do have CCTV in our spaces to be able to check recordings for possible accusations or incidents to address misconduct directly.
  • Zero Tolerance Approach and Barring Policy:  We have a Zero Tolerance Policy against all forms of harassment, bullying and discrimination and our Licensed Trade Barring Policy sets out a clear and consistent framework to tackle misconduct in our bars.
  • Safe Space Policy:  Protects students against discrimination or hate on grounds of protected characteristics.
  • A Taxi Home:  We offer unaccompanied vulnerable students a taxi home from The Vault or Guy’s Bar.
  • Incident Reporting and Investigation:  We act on complaints regarding KCLSU spaces, taking direct action where necessary.
  • Partnership with King’s College London:  We continue to challenge, influence, and collaborate to create a sense of belonging and safety at King’s through projects such as the Community Charter and Report and Support.
