3 Famous Disabled People in History

This Disability History Month, it is important to raise awareness of disabled individuals’ contributions to history. We have listed 3 very famous people below, who you may not have known were disabled. 

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898)

British Lewis Carroll is most famously known for being the author of a number of children’s books, including Alice in Wonderland. The author was also autistic and experienced a speech disorder and partial deafness, however he channeled his imagination through writing and brought joy to so many children.

Helen Keller (1880-1968) 

American Helen Keller experienced dual loss of sight and hearing at a young age. Nevertheless, she began to communicate through tactile means, and went on to become the first deaf-blind person to earn a BA degree. As an advocate for those with disabilities and a very famous author, Keller went on to found the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) 

Frida Kahlo was an extremely well known Mexican Artist, known for her vibrant and emotive paintings. Khalo experienced many chronic health issues as a result of a bus accident from a young age. Her paintings were a way for her to depict her own experiences and challenges in a creative way. After her death it has continued to resonate with people around the world.
