Welcome to the King's College London Music Society (KCLMS)
The King’s College London Music Society (KCLMS) is the central hub of music-making at King’s, comprising three flagship ensembles; the Sinfonietta, Camerata and Wind Orchestra. We offer an exclusive Musicians’ Directory service for musicians at King’s (reading all subjects), plus weekly Piano and Composition Workshops. With plenty of concerts and socials ahead, plus an exciting society-wide tour headed by a dynamic new committee, join us for an unforgettable year of music-making. Please note, we were formerly known by Modern Music Society and are in the process of officially changing our name.
What we offer:
We are based across the King's Building in the Strand Campus and hold a number of large ensemble rehearsals and workshops, piano and composition masterclasses, and regular socials throughout the week.
Ensembles
KCLMS offers three main large ensembles, as well as a newly-formed chamber choir and a selection of chamber ensemble groups. To rehearse and perform with our ensembles, please purchase our standard membership and get in touch to register yourself as a member.
1. Camerata
The King’s College London Camerata (KCLCam) is King’s premier string ensemble, directed by Sheena Jibowu. Serving as a space for string players to immerse themselves in a world of specially-composed music for strings, we have held concerts at St Giles’ Cripplegate and the College Chapel. This year, we look forward to performing works by Vivaldi, Grieg to Ennio Morricone.
2. Wind Orchestra
The King’s College London Wind Orchestra (KCLWO) is King’s newest and most exciting addition to our thriving music department; a formally established ensemble for advanced woodwind, brass and percussionists to work on lesser-explored challenging works from the wind repertory.
3. Sinfonietta
The King’s College London Sinfonietta (KCLSinf) comprises a select group of talented and enthusiastic musicians, performing rarely-performed repertoire, and new and challenging works by up-and-coming composers. The ensemble gathers for projects, with a week of rehearsals in the lead-up to performances.
4. Chamber Choir
The King’s College London Chamber Choir (KCLCC) is an auditioned student-run vocal ensemble. A friendly and inclusive group of singers, the choir rehearses and performs secular and sacred works to a high standard. The choir enjoys singing an eclectic range of music, having performed works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Amy Beach. Recent engagements include performing Rebecca Dale’s Materna Requiem alongside the Sinfonietta, and singing carols during food distribution projects with Charity Begins at Home.
5. Chamber Ensembles
We are also open to pitches for new ensembles. We are also happy to accept applications should you wish to start an ensemble but do not yet have all the players, as we are happy to help with locating extra players. Apply here
Pianist and Composer Workshops
Piano Workshops will run every other Thursday evening on the Strand Campus and will provide an opportunity for pianists of all abilities to meet and workshop many skills that are required in a modern pianist. Workshops with professionals will also take place, providing the opportunity to learn about extended techniques and other piano related abilities. To sign up click here.
Composer Workshops will run every other Thursday evening on the Strand Campus giving attendees the chance to learn, develop, and discuss technical and expressive elements of composition with fellow composers. Members will have the opportunity to have their compositions performed in an end of year concert. To sign up click here.
Charity Outreach
Members of the KCL Music Society have enjoyed performing and singing for food collections outside Zimbabwe House on the Strand. We look to continue this initiative, providing musicians with meaningful performance opportunities, and supporting charities close to our community.
Socials and Wellbeing
We have many socials throughout the year, both directly related to modern music and others being more relaxed gatherings of society members. To hear about the socials subscribe to our mailing list and follow us on social media.
From all of us here at the KCL Music Society, we would like to thank you for visiting our page and hope to see you at many of our events throughout the year!
