Fairness 4 GTAs

A lecturer sits at a desk with a microphone.
We are a PGR-student led campaign fighting for King's to recognise the important contributions PGR students are making to King's higher education, public service and research output, by:

  1. providing fair payment and working conditions to all PGR-students who took on teaching or supervision responsibilities.

  2. acknowledging the contribution of PGR students outside of their PhD project through the creation of further paid Graduate Teaching Assistant and Graduate Research Assistant positions.

Campaign Asks

  • An increase in the hourly pay rate and London weighting proportional to the increase in inflation in the United Kingdom for all Postgraduate Research (PGR) students that are Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) or Graduate Research Assistants (GRA) at King’s.
  • We want KCL to commit that all increases in salary, benefits and bonuses given to King's academic staff will be given at the same rate to GTAs and GRAs, regardless of their student status.
  • Recognise any unpaid teaching and supervision currently carried out by PGR students through the creation of further GTA roles.
  • Recognise any unpaid research contributions of PGR students at King's and fairly compensate these through the creation of a Graduate Research Assistant role, with similar employment terms to the Graduate Teaching Assistant framework.
  • Student representatives must be consulted before any changes regarding working conditions are implemented.
  • The new GTA Framework and a newly created GRA Framework must be respected and revised before the beginning of each academic year in consultation with King's Doctoral Students' Association.
  • GTAs and GRAs must have elected representatives on the College Education Committee, and the College Council.
  • KCL must ensure that GTA and GRAs representatives are present at faculty level education meetings.
