Student Action for Refugees (STAR)
Student Action for Refugees (STAR) is a student-run organisation that aims to raise awareness of refugee issues and promote integration of refugees and asylum seekers into society.
Here at KCL STAR we have volunteering opportunities twice a week in Battersea working with children and young people from refugee backgrounds:
Juniors (ages 5-9) on Tuesdays, 4.30-6.30pm
Seniors (ages 10 to 14) on Wednesdays, 6.30-8pm
Through this volunteering we give the children invaluable help with their English and school homework, whilst also enabling them to develop relationships and a sense of community. Many children and young people from refugee backgrounds have no one to help them with their schoolwork. Many parents do not understand the English education system or the curriculum and are often unable to speak, read or write enough English to be ahead of their children in their learning. Homework club offers a high ratio of support, and opportunities to increase the social confidence of children as they mix with a different range of people and are exposed to new experiences. Alongside our volunteering opportunities we also work hard throughout the year to campaign for the welfare of refugees living abroad, and the rights of asylum seekers in the UK.
