A petition has been requested

A petition has been requested to call for a referendum on 'Should KCL Student Union disaffiliate from the National Union of Students (UK) and National Union of Students Charity?'

The motion summary

What do we want?

For the Student Union to host a referendum on the SU's affiliation with the National Union of Students UK and National Union of Students Charity

Why do we want it?

As a student body, we believe we should have a say in the Student Union’s continued affiliation with the NUS UK and NUS Charity. ?Every year the Student Union pays a combined £37,500 in affiliation fees to the NUS UK and NUS Charity yet as a student body we see little value in return.

In the last year, and in the midst of a cost of living crisis, the NUS spent £600,000 on investigations including into its democratically elected President, a process which ultimately led to her removal by unelected officials.

The Federation of Student Islamic Societies and The Association of Student Activism for Palestine have both raised concerns about the impact of the investigation on Muslim and Palestinian students.

As the NUS continues to become less relevant to the life of students, now is the time to give students a say in our future association with the NUS.
