Overview

This academic year, the German Society at King’s are proud to present Krankheit der Jugend, a challenging and thought provoking play by Austrian playwright Ferdinand Bruckner about a group of students in 1920s Vienna.

The English language version of the Krankheit der Jugend is called Pains of Youth, and was well received at the National Theatre in 2009. However, what interested us about the play was the fact that it has been somewhat forgotten in contemporary German performance culture, in addition to its interesting and emotive subject matter. We hope that not only students and speakers of German will engage with this brilliant play, but hopefully students and young people interested in the discourse surrounding the pressure and strains of youth, medical ethics, gender roles, class systems and what role these themes play in this particular period of the 20th century.
