Hi guys!!

I am Samira Bello, I am running for Events Officer and I would appreciate your support!

The ACS has been a safe space for me to be myself while navigating university life and a completely new environment. Coming from Nigeria in September, I had no idea what to expect but I have been pleasantly surprised, and being a part of the society has made my time here enjoyable.

I believe I am lucky to have experienced the events and benefited from opportunities that were put together this year. In addition to the platform already established by the current committee, I plan to create new opportunities for us to strengthen the African-Caribbean bond for the benefit of society and its members. I would aim to increase the diversity of our events by incorporating different aspects of African and Caribbean cultures. This could involve inviting speakers or performers from different countries and regions, showcasing different cuisines, and highlighting different cultural traditions. This would provide our members with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the vast diversity within the African and Caribbean diaspora.

My number one priority is to create and maintain a safe space for all students of African and Caribbean descent to socialize, irrespective of background, gender or sexuality. Community building is an essential aspect of our society. I would aim to create a sense of community among our members by organizing events that promote interaction and collaboration. This could include social events, cultural fairs, and educational events. I would also encourage our members to take an active role in shaping the direction of our society by soliciting feedback and suggestions from them.

To start off the 2023/2024 academic year, I would ensure that the ACS is properly represented during Fresher's Fair. While I work closely with the Head of Events throughout the year, I will ensure that the ACS holds events that everyone can attend with no age or religious barrier. This does not only make being a part of the society worthwhile but also worth the money for everyone that joins. I am an advocate for consistency, who strongly believes in making the most out of every opportunity, hence, I plan to organise several opportunities for students to build friendships, create bonds and maintain relationships beyond the freshers period, but throughout the academic year. I will see to it that these events cater to the needs of as many students, within the maximum capability of the committee.

Why should you vote for Samira Bello

I think I would be suited to this role for many reasons, not limited to, but including:

- My exceptional organisational skills.
- My team working abilities
- My love for planning events (and attending them too :) catch me on the dance floor anytime, anywhere fr)

Through my life experiences, I have developed the skills that make me perfect for this role, whether it was being elected as Library Prefect and Deputy Head Girl in Years 10 and 11 or getting formal leadership training from the African Leadership Academy Global Scholars Programme. These experiences enhanced my communication skills, team-working, and leadership abilities. I am also currently the First Year Student Rep for Biomedical Engineering and most related to the role I am nominating myself for, I am a Freshers Rep for the Events Team of the African and Caribbean Society.

I strongly believe that I have something great to offer each and every member of the committee and the ACS as a whole next year! I look forward to serving on the committee and I’m super excited for you to experience what the ACS holds (see I'm very enthusiastic).

Thank you, thank you!

Big kisses if you made it to the end x

Sam
