This World Laughter Day (4 May 2025), we’re taking a moment to appreciate something simple, powerful, and completely free: laughter.
Whether it’s over a meme, a voice note from a friend, or a chaotic moment in the group chat, laughter connects us, grounds us, and reminds us that joy can still be found, even during exam season.
What Is World Laughter Day?
First celebrated in 1998, World Laughter Day was created by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the Laughter Yoga movement in India. The idea is beautifully simple: bring people together through laughter to promote peace, positivity, and mental wellbeing.
Since then, it’s grown into a global movement that reminds us:
“When you laugh, you change. When the world laughs, the world changes.”
In a world that can sometimes feel a little heavy, laughter is a reminder of our shared humanity.
Laughter and Mental Health: More Than Just a Giggle
Laughter isn’t just fun, it’s good for your brain. Studies show that laughter can:
- Lower stress hormones like cortisol
- Release mood-boosting endorphins
- Strengthen relationships and social connections
- Improve focus and resilience
- Even relieve physical tension in the body
At university, where life can feel like a whirlwind of deadlines, readings, and caffeine-fuelled nights, laughter can act as a mental reset button, one that reminds you to breathe, connect, and take things a little less seriously.

How to Add More Joy to Your Day at King’s
You don’t need to force a laugh to feel good; joy lives in small moments. Here are a few simple ways to bring more lightness into your day at King’s:
1. Go to a Comedy Night
Keep an eye on the KCLSU Events Page; there are often open mic nights, stand-up sets, or improv shows happening across our campuses. Laughter in a room full of strangers? Instant mood boost.
2. Take a Break (And Actually Rest)
Head to The Shack at Strand, and take that lunch break you’ve been putting off. Chat with a friend or just enjoy being out of the library for a bit, your brain will thank you.
5. Try Yoga
Look out for sessions during Take Time Out events at King’s!

Your Reminder: You’re Allowed to Laugh
During stressful times, it's easy to feel like joy is something we have to earn. But laughter doesn’t need to be deserved. It’s a natural part of being human, and allowing yourself space to smile or laugh doesn’t mean you’re not taking life seriously.
Sometimes, a well-timed giggle is what gives you the strength to keep going.
