[CANCELLED] Lunch & Learn: Improving Support for Disabled Survivors of Abuse

Monday 08 December 2025

3pm - 4:30pm

Activity Room 2, Guy's Campus

[CANCELLED]

A special discussion led by Lucy Wing and Adjust KCL

This Disability History Month, and in honour of the national theme “Disability: Life and Death,” we’ll be joined by expert Lucy Wing for a talk, co-hosted with Adjust KCL, that examines sexual and domestic violence, and the key issues disabled and neurodivergent survivors face.

Too often, the systems designed to protect instead create barriers that impact disabled people’s quality of life, and in some cases, place them at risk.

Delivered in a sensitive, non-explicit, trauma-informed way, this session will explore how these services routinely fail disabled survivors.

We’ll look at where small improvements could help, and where a complete systemic overhaul is needed.

This talk is open to everyone: friends and supporters of survivors, community members, practitioners, activists, campaigners, and anyone wanting to deepen their understanding.

It’s a call to action to recognise how ableism, sanism, racism, xenophobia, and the deprivation of liberty intersect and compound harm — and what we can do to challenge this.

This event is held in collaboration with the Disabled Students' Network, who advocate for equity, safety, and dignity for disabled students and the wider disabled community.

Topics referenced (non-explicit):

  • Sexual violence and domestic abuse
  • Ableism and disableism
  • Sanism and discrimination against mentally ill people
  • Racism and xenophobia (particularly in policing)
  • Deprivation of liberty and sectioning

If you have any access requirements, please email [email protected].

(This session will likely touch of some very sensitive and potentially upsetting themes and so it's important to look after yourself and get support if you want or need it. You can explore support services available at KCL here and can explore KCLSU Wellbeing resources here. We'll have further information on support services available in the session).
