KCL Space

About us
KCL Space, founded in 2017, is a student-run society which comes under the Department of Physics. The aim of KCL Space is to provide its members with opportunities to engage in space related activities, organised both within the college and internationally. We also work to bridge the gap between the niche that is the space industry and the students aspiring to become part of it; and also work towards closing this gap through its academic support, mentoring sessions and networking events.

Events
KCL Space invites a variety of speakers to talk to our society members about their exciting new discoveries in the space sector and career opportunities in the field. Alongside hosting lectures, having our own podcast series, picnic, collaborations with many societies, wellbeing events, a virtual symposium, Women in Space online- live session, and many more events. Social events including weekly quiz nights and outings, stargazing trips, and even formal evening events(if social distancing norms allow). This is where members can gather in an informal setting and meet like-minded peers. Occasionally, we also team up with space societies from other London universities.

Affiliations
KCL Space is a branch of the United Kingdom Students for Exploration and Development of Space (UKSEDS) and our members regularly volunteer with the organisation.
The society also has strong links with the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAS) and LaunchLink, with the aim of providing a platform for collaborations on projects.

Facts
  -  We are comprised of both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students
  -  We welcome students of all backgrounds with open arms into the family of space enthusiasts.
  -  We create and provide a safe environment for our members, letting them be free to explore the vastness of the universe and themselves at the same time.
  -  We have been awarded: The Best Branch of 2020 Award by UKSEDS
  -  We have won the NASA Space Apps Challenge nationally and reached Runners Up worldwide

Discipline
Our Society members typically study a subject in the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (NMS), but we also have members from other Faculties and Departments.

Rocketry

We would be partnering with KCL Robotics to partcipate in the Olympus Rover Trials, where we would be making mini mars rovers; and we also build rockets and work towards the UKSED’s National Rocketry Championship once again. If that wasn’t exciting enough, once our rockets are built we get to launch them too. For semester one, we would be adding study resources, slides, course recommendations and live sessions where students can learn the needed skills for mechanical project workings, and in semester 2 we would work hand on building the machines.

CubeSats

Last year we entered the UKSEDS CubeSat Challenge, where we designed a CubeSat to detect trash in the oceans. This year we want to go a step further and build our own CubeSats. Watch this space for more info!

Space Law

The KCL Space Moot Team competes with the chance of going before the International Court of Justice. The current team will present their work, and are on the lookout for next year’s team.

Conference Delegations

We send a delegation to the annual National Students Space Conference and go to other events throughout the year.

Outreach

We run an annual Galactic Challenge in February, for students aged 10-13, in collaboration with the Space Science and Engineering Foundation and UK Space Design Competition. Members act as mentors to the participants, who are tasked with designing an entire space settlement with a day.
