GUARANTOR GUARANTEE 🗂️✅
Did you know that many King's students are forced to pay six months rent upfront or rely on costly third party guarantor services just to secure housing?
When renting in the UK, landlord usually ask for a guarantor - someone who agrees to cover the rent if the tenant cannot pay. But King's does not currently provide a rent guarantor scheme. This leaves students with limited and expensive options:
- Paying thousands of pounds upfront
- Using services like Housing Hand, which charges an extra 5.5% of the total rent
This issue hits hardest for:
- International students (54% of KCL's student body) who often don't have a UK-based guarantor
- Low-income and care-leaver domestic students who may struggle to access a reliable guarantor
Meanwhile, other leading London universities like UCL, LSE and Imperial already operate guarantor schemes to support their students. It's time for King's to catch up.
Our Call
Through Guarantor Guarantee, we're demanding that King's College London:
- Act as a guarantor for students who need it
- Set fair, inclusive eligibility criteria that reflect real market conditions
- Establish an internal scheme that avoids costly third-party providers
