What is an NUS National Conference?

NUS (National Union of Students) is a group of student unions in the UK. Being affiliated with NUS means that as a union, we can create policy and campaign on a national level.

NUS Conferences are the lead decision making bodies of the organisation where delegates representing students from across NUS membership review the work over the last year, decide on priorities and policy for the following year and elect the leadership.

Who attends NUS National Conferences?

Where possible KCLSU aims to send as many delegates as we are entitled to and these are elected in our Spring Elections. NUS use a 'Fair Representation systemwhich we use to select the delegates attending.

What is the role of a delegate at an NUS National Conference?

There are three main roles of a Delegate at any of the NUS Conferences which includes: voting on policy, voting in elections, voting on reports.

Policy – setting the direction

Delegates will discuss and vote on motions which will become policy of NUS when passed. The policy will inform the organisation about what you, its student members, think about key issues.

This policy will be interpreted and enacted by the relevant Officers, National Councils and Committees.

Elections – choosing the leadership

Delegates will elect the Officers and committee members for the year ahead for the relevant Officer positions, Zones, National Councils and Committees.

Reports – reviewing the work

Delegates will review the work of the various committees, councils and governing bodies. Delegates will have the opportunity to hold to account the officers responsible by asking them questions and voting on whether to approve it.
