Barbell Club is King’s only sports club dedicated to the sport of Powerlifting. We offer coached sessions for people of all experience and fitness levels who want to learn the big three lifts: the Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift. This year, we also have the privilege of being offered top-notch venues for our training sessions.
Our Coaches and Club Programmes
Our advanced coach, Norman Cheung, is one of the UK’s top Powerlifting coaches, having trained multiple lifters to become British record holders as well being one of the Team GB coaches at the 2017 and 2018 world championships. Our novice coach, Izi Onadim, is a medic as well as a highly experienced athlete in powerlifting, weightlifting, and strongman. She has a knack for teaching the basics and getting novices excited to powerlift.
Club programmes will be available for full members of the club, though it is not compulsory and members are welcome to follow their own programmes. To enquire about the programmes, you can contact our President and Treasurer (see below).
Along with weekly sessions, we guide club members towards opportunities to compete in powerlifting at the local level and above. While competing is not a requirement, we believe getting on the platform is one of the best ways for a lifter to set goals, get motivated, and represent the university. As our members can attest, the adrenaline rush a competitor experiences on the platform is unmatched compared to lifting in the gym.
We are fortunate to have had an incredible 2017/18 year. Some notable achievements from our members include: Nathan Winsala placing 6th in his category while representing Great Britain at the IPF World Classic Championships in Canada this year, subsequently breaking the U23 British records for Squat and Total; and Evita Otigbah taking 1st place at the British University Championships where she broke multiple university records, and getting the Best Lifter award as well as 1st place in her category at the Greater London competitions only a few months later. The club has grown in size tremendously over the last couple of years with more and more people becoming interested in competing, and we strive to continue investing in the sport.
Tasters, Training Sessions and Prices
This semester (2nd semester, 2019), we are offering twice weekly sessions on Wednesdays and Sundays. Our Wednesday lifters will enjoy the convenience of lifting at CrossFit Blackfriars - a centrally-located gym easily accessible from Strand or Guy’s campuses, and our Sunday lifters will have the privilege of training at one of London’s best powerlifting gyms: Built Differently gym in Haringey. Built Differently is a powerlifting haven, boasting top of the line equipment and an environment that can’t be beaten. The only difference between the sessions is location and coach: Wednesday sessions will be at CrossFit Blackfriars from 2-4 with coach Izi and Sunday sessions will be from 2-4 at Built Differently Gym with coach Norman. Izi is an excellent coach with great skill at teaching proper form and individualized technique. Norman has an excellent and well known reputation for coaching lifters to competition. While members can attend whichever session they like, we strongly encourage lifters who intend to compete to attend the Sunday sessions!
*Membership grants access to club resources, but sessions must be purchased seperately.
