Overview

The Black Dog has long been used as a metaphor for depression and other forms of mental ill-health. Over a quarter of students at UK universities are living with a Black Dog of their own, but as many as half will never disclose this to their university and thus may miss out on vital support resources.

Through Outrun the Black Dog, King’s AXC hopes to champion the benefits of running for mental wellbeing, while making members of our university community aware of the mental health support services available to them. This is our mental health wellbeing initiative as part of KCLSU Wellbeing Week.

Research has consistently shown that exercise can be just as effective at reducing depressive symptoms as antidepressants, as well as improving mood, self-esteem and cognitive ability. Yet many of us fail to participate in sufficient levels of exercise.

On Wednesday 4th November 2020, King’s AXC would like to invite all KCL students and staff to explore the beneficial effects of running on mental wellbeing for themselves, by joining us for a relaxed 5km run around the River Thames. If you live in KCL accommodation in Southwark, the run will likely come to you. The run will be in groups of 6, each led by a run leader.

Whether total novice or seasoned vet, all you have to do is lace up and join us!
