Overview

King's Shakespeare Company is pleased to present our winter production of 'The Winter's Tale', one of Shakespeare's last plays, famous for the stage direction: 'Exit pursued by a bear.' Polixenes, King of Bohemia, has paid a nine month long visit to his friend and ally Leontes, king of Sicilia and his wife, Hermione.

The play opens as Polixines prepares to take his leave of the court, however Leontes becomes convinced that the heavily pregnant Hermione is having an affair with Polixines. Overcome by jealousy, he orders his faithful servant Camillo to poison Polixenes, however the two instead flee to Bohemia. Meanwhile, Hermione is arrested, gives birth to a daughter and is put on trial. Publicly condemned by her husband, and hearing of the death of her son Mamillius, Hermione collapses and dies, and Leontes commands that his daughter be taken away and exposed. The child is left on the shore of Bohemia, where she is found by a kindly shepherd who takes her in. Sixteen years later, Perdita is now grown and unaware of who she truly is. She falls in love Florizel, the son of Polixienes who has disguised himself as a shepherd. However, all the deceptions are soon uncovered and the truth comes to the surface.
