Representing the community of non-standard students.
I've always disliked the idea of 'mature' as a term that identifies a part of the student body, as it implies that we are just a group of older students.
I think one of the biggest things that needs recognising in the student world is that a mature student doesn't have to just be older, as they can just be a student that has more responsibilities on their time and person than normal be that a full time job or a family.
And as a student that has to balance a full time job, a family and a child I undertand how this balancing act can impact on being a student, be that from the social elements to the time constraints on how to manage the workload at times when it feels like I can't.
I'd like to create some simple changes not just to the 'mature' student body but to any student that is in this position;
- more accessible information on support available
- more university initiative on what non-financial support is available
- a social network developed either via the NUS group page or through other mediums so that people who fall into the non-standard student mould can engage with people in similar situations
And lastly to represent the groups as a whole to the NUS on matters that count towards the overall improvement of the student experience
