Access to education should not be dependent on financial resources. The current system, however, means many students do not progress to Higher Education due to financial concerns. Tuition fees standing at £9,000 per year for undergraduates, as well as fees reaching £10,000 per year for postgraduates often deter would-be-academics on the basis of their background. Over simplified assessments for maintenance loans have lead to financial struggles for some student; a problem especially prevalent in London.
As your NUS delegate, I would lobby to ensure that no student should have to take finances into account when considering university.
