From the pen of the President
These are the fruits of my labours from the last month:
Policy & Lobbying
• Pushed for a working group of Education Committee to concentrate on the Skills and Employability agenda. This group has met once so far and is looking to creating a policy on Personal Development Plans for all undergraduate students in the first instance.
• Met with the Heads Medicine and Biomedical and Health Schools. Topics covered included their thoughts on the current KCL scholarship scheme and how KCLSU can be more closely involved. Particularly as the scholarships are awarded for both academic achievement and contribution to the KCL community.
• Met with Rick Trainor and Phil Whitfield (Principal and Vice Principal Students respectively). Topics covered included, looking how we can have a role in the 2012 Olympics, we also spoke about the need for more study space on Strand campus. Scholarships and bursaries were also discussed and how KCLSU can aid these processes.
Campaigning & Engagement
• Met with the Annual Fund team to work out ways forward in terms of promoting the fund to our student groups.
• Went to NUS Regional. There was much discussion about NUS Governance reform. I stated that most students understood that NUS didn’t work in its current format and that review of its Governance was essential to move forward.
Representation
• Attended a graduation ceremony and gave a speech.
• Did an Induction talk for new PhD students starting this term. Aimed to shed some light on KCLSU and how it is not just the preserve of the traditional 18-21 year old student.
• With the AGM fast approaching much is being done at the moment besides organising the event. This year it was felt of extreme importance that Trustees are as prepared and ready to answer questions as possible. The AGM is a chance for students to hold the whole board to account and not just Officers.
• Attended Student Council. The latest meeting was by far the most productive of the year. The Sabbs attend in order to give advice on certain issues, support council in achieving their aims and also giving the council a chance to ask us questions on our work.
• Attended ULU Senate. This is a crucial period for ULU, in light of the Heads of Colleges review of ULU funding. This funding will be reduced over the next couple of years with only the core activities of student representation, sport, societies and London Student being funded.
• Selected to be on a panel including other students (Jamie Vassalo and Mark Ke Sun) to appoint the new Director General Higher Education Strategy and Implementation, this person will lead on DIUS’s policy and relationships towards higher education institutions (universities and colleges of higher education) , and key intermediary bodies such as the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Admittedly its taken a long time for me to get round to doing this but welcome to my first blog of the new year.
As you are probably well aware, the last few weeks have been hectic. Since the beginning of August me and the other officers have been working hard both in getting ready for freshers and the year ahead as well as working together for the first time as a team.
So far its been great and my 7th.... yes 7th freshers has been the most manic ever.
The numbers of people who have turned out to events, Welcome Fairs and Sightseeing Sundays has been phenomenal. I hope everybody has had a fantastic Welcome Week. Now the work begins! Today terms officially starts, and it gets even busier as returning students come back.
Some of our highlights in the last couple of months include meeting Ken Livingstone at City Hall, Camilla, HRH Duchess of Cornwall, who collected an Honorary Fellowship, taking part in Kings' first annual awards ceremony and meeting the legend that is Desmond Tutu.
Also we tasted success on Thursday at the Third Sector Awards. We were shortlisted for “Most Improved Trustee Board” and came away winners. Third Sector is the nation leading magazine for the Voluntary/Third Sector.
So I hope everyone is settling in and ready and raring to go fo 07/08. Hopefully from now on I'll be more regular in my updating but until then...
