What issues might a Course Rep face?

It's impossible to pre-empt all the possible situations you may find yourself in, as the answer to the above question is really 'any issue a student raises'. However, here are some of the more common ones.

  • Course Deadlines
    • lecturers changing a deadline without consulting students, then penalising them if they don't meet it
    • deadlines too close to exams
  • Lecture rooms
    • size, seating, temperature and acoustics issues
    • overcrowding
    • accessibility
  • Reading lists
    • text availability
    • inadequate provision
  • Hidden course costs
    • such as students being charged for course handouts or needing to order books from abroad
  • Return of coursework
    • assignments not marked and returned before the following assignment is handed in to enable them to make use of the tutor's comments
    • inadequate feedback
  • Volume of work
    • too much or too little
  • Assessments & Examinations
    • unclear methods
    • availability of past exam papers
  • Discriminatory practices
    • inequality of opportunity
  • Extra help
    • availability, e.g. for students who are not computer literate
  • Referencing
    • lack of provision of a style guide
    • no information about plagiarism and how to avoid it
  • Consistently cancelled or late running lectures
  • Limited access to lab equipment or computers
  • Timetabling clashes
