Start a club

With over 50 clubs at KCLSU, there’s something to cater for everyone’s interests. However, every year around a dozen new groups are officially recognised (‘ratified’) by KCLSU. Do you have a great idea for an activity? If so, here are the steps you need to follow in order to create your very own KCLSU club or society…

  1. Ensure that there isn’t a club that already caters for your needs
In order for a new club to be considered for ratification, their aims and objectives cannot significantly overlap with that of an existing group. This is the first stumbling point for many applications – investigate all the details of the existing clubs by studying their descriptions and their constitutions online.
  2. Download and complete the application pack
Ensure that you complete all of sections in the pack, especially the official constitution. If your constitution is not detailed, your application will be deferred until you have completed one, so save yourself some time and do it thoroughly from the start! Next, use the interested persons sign-up sheet in the pack to…
  3. Get the names and details of 25 full members of KCLSU on your 'Supporting Signatures' sheet (in the pack)
A full member of KCLSU is anyone who is studying full-time at KCL. People who ‘sign-up’ on your sheet are not actually joining your club: they are only expressing an interest. Students from other University of London colleges do not count towards your 25 members (although they and others will be able join as an associate member if your club is ratified).
  4. Email your constitution pack to cas@kclsu.org and hand in your sign-up sheet to any of the three Student Centres – Strand, Waterloo or Guy’s
Printed versions of your constitution pack will not be accepted – please only email them to cas@kclsu.org. You will then be contacted about your application. You will be invited to present your case for ratification to a group of elected KCLSU representatives – this will include a brief description of what your club or society plans to do, and to consider your proposed constitution.

The process can be quite time-consuming, but will ensure that you have considered all the necessary components of your application. If ratified, you will be expected to inform KCLSU of your committee contact details, and in return you will be provided with such facilities as pigeon hole space, financial accounts, and Union training.
