In 2009 the £3,000 cap on undergraduate fees is eligible for review. The head of the Russell group, of which King's is a member, has said that an increase in fees is inevitable. Figures of £5,000 to £15,000 per year have been suggested.
KCLSU believes that education is integral to the success of all societies - for economic growth, the protection of the most vulnerable, and the development of our global community. We therefore also believe that education should be fully state funded.
The argument that graduates will earn more than those who didn't go to university ignores the fact that many graduates choose to work in the public sector as nurses, social workers, teachers, doctors, and civil servants. These key workers are vital to the development of a society in which everyone has equal access to opportunity.
So even if you argue that students don't have to pay anything up front, and that the debt is only repayed after graduates begin to earn £15,000, think about the impact that the marketisation of education is going to have on our country. It's already reeking havoc with the NHS, and for years pseudo competition has been grinding down our public transport systems. Education is the basis on which we have developed and established our society - if we sell it to the highest bidder, where does that leave the rest of us?
