  • Can I appeal if I am not happy with my exam results?

Yes, you have the right to request a review of a decision made by the Board of Examiners, however you cannot appeal against academic judgement. You can appeal where you have evidence that your assessment could have been adversely affected by factors which you were unable to divulge earlier. Secondly, you can appeal if there has been a significant administrative error on the part of the College. You appeal through an EDR2 form which you can get from your School Office, the College website or from the KCLSU Advice Service. You must submit your EDR2 form within 14 days from receiving your results or decision along with any evidence and a written statement explaining your situation. For help when submitting an appeal please contact the KCLSU Advice Service who can check through your form and give guidance on putting together a written statement.

  • If I am accused of misconduct what should I do next?

If you receive a letter from the College regarding any sort of misconduct, either academic or disciplinary, you should contact the KCLSU Advice Service. The misconduct regulations have several different options and an advisor can explain these steps to you and also arrange for a Student Officer to attend the meetings with you for support.

  • What is fitness to practice?

The College has a responsibility for students who are studying for a programme which leads to a professional qualification. These courses include Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy and others. The College must ensure that the student is safe and suitable for the given profession and fit to practice. You could be deemed to be unfit if you have a health condition, behaviour or attitude which may have an affect on your ability to practice the given profession.

  • What should I do if I am not happy with the quality of teaching at College or I have a problem with a member of College staff?

If you wish to make a complaint or pursue something which you are not happy about it is first advisable to do this at a local level, i.e. within your department. So it would be best to either go to a personal tutor, or if your problem is with them then you should speak to someone else within the Department. If your concern is a wider issue it would also be worth mentioning this with your course representative so they can highlight the matter at a staff/student liaison committee. If you can demonstrate that you have used internal mechanisms to solve the problem and you are still not happy then you can write to the Principal outlining your concerns. You should set out the nature of the complaint, how it came about and the steps you have taken to resolve it. The complaint will then be forwarded onto the Academic Registrar for investigation. If the matter cannot be resolved to your satisfaction then it may be referred to a formal Grievance Redress Committee where a final decision shall be made. The KCLSU Advice Service can assist you in formulating and putting together a complaint.

  • What should I do if I can't attend an exam or submit work due to personal circumstances?

If you are ill or have other circumstances which are affecting your studies then you should submit a mitigating circumstances form (MCF). The purpose of this is to inform the College of your situation and make sure that your assessment is not affected. By using the MCF, you can withdraw from an exam if you are unable to attend or ask for an extension to a piece of work. If you have already submitted work or attended an exam then you can retrospectively withdraw, however you will need good reason for not telling the College before the assessment. You can get an MCF from your School Office, the College website and from the KCSLU Advice Service. You must submit the form to your School Office at least 7 days before the assessment in order to be notified of the outcome in advance of the assessment. You should always try to speak with your Personal Tutor to make them aware of your situation and for help submitting the MCF please contact the KCLSU Advice Service.

  • What will happen if I am considered for academic failure due to my progress?

As a student it is possible that you can be removed from the College based on your academic progress. This could include you having a poor attendance record, a lack of ability or you are unable to fulfil the requirements of the course. Your registration could also be terminated if you are not permitted to do any further attempts in an examination. This should never come as a shock to you because you would always receive a clear written warning from the School before this stage. If you are worried about your academic progress you should speak to your personal tutor or the KCLSU Advice Service.

  • Who do I go to for advice which is not academic related?

The College operate a Welfare and Counselling Service. The Welfare Service offers free advice on non academic issues, such as, money and funding, housing rights, immigration issues, benefits and much more.
